Christmas Markets in South Tyrol
Christmas traditions in Merano and Environs

At the end of November, several historical cellars, courtyards and castles in Merano and its surrounding areas are transformed into traditional Christmas markets. Local artists and artisans from the nearby South Tyrolean villages offer local products for sale, and Christmas lights and music help create a special South Tyrolean holiday atmosphere, especially in the Advent markets held at Tyrol Castle, S. Leonardo/St. Leonhard and Scena/Schenna.

The Christmas market in Merano/Meran (Meraner Weihnacht in German) in the center of the spa town is especially spectacular. The Christmals market is a certified Green Event, and is known for its environmentally friendly emphasis on local and seasonal products. Small wooden stalls line the streets. At Thermenplatz square, giant Christmas bulbs welcome visitors to dine in an uniquely festive atmosphere between the ice skating rink and the famed Terme Merano thermal baths. Traditional music and brass bands also add to the holiday mood.

Christmas in Merano
Advent atmosphere in Merano

The end of November marks the start of the enchanting Christmas Market (Meraner Weihnacht) in Merano/Meran, which lasts until January 6. The promenade lights up with sparkling decorations and music fills the air of the Piazza Terme/Thermenplatz square, brightening up the Christmas Market.
The numerous attractions include a children's merry-go-round, an ice-skating rink, a children’s zoo, small restaurants in the shape of giant Christmas bulbs on the Thermenplatz square and spa treatments in the Terme Merano cube. Ergonomically designed wooden stalls of ecological construction are arranged in rows on the promenade leading up to the Piazza della Rena/Sandplatz square.
South Tyrolean handicrafts, artworks, traditional delicacies, Christmas decorations and local farm products are on display at the stalls. The Christmas bulbs made of wood, glass and felt can comfortably accommodate up to eight persons inside. Known locally as Thermenkugln, these colorful compact bistros serve South Tyrolean cuisine. With all this and more, the Merano Christmas Market is in full swing.
